The original method of popping the popcorns included a series of steps. Machines were not introduced during that time.
Therefore, the task of popping popcorns was done manually. Raw corn kernels were put in a basket which was shaken by a wire and put on an open flame or fire. But, this old fashioned popcorn popper produced hot, dry, unequally prepared and mostly burnt popcorns. Later, many modified versions of popcorn machines were introduced which prepared evenly cooked, hot and much tastier popcorns. The first old fashioned popcorn popper was used in the popcorn machine invented by Charles Cretor of Lebanon, Ohio. His machine automatically prepared popcorns from a mixture of oil, lard and salt. It had its own seasoning which produced uniformly cooked popcorns for the first time.
Later in 1893, Cretors created a steam powered popcorn machine that was more efficient than his first invention. The popcorn popper used in this machine could roast 12 pounds of pop corn. Cretors redesigned this machine and created another popcorn machine which could roast peanuts and pop popcorn simultaneously. This old fashioned popcorn popper became widely popular among retailer as well as the customer. Later, on August 10, 1891, Cretors came up with another new automated peanut roaster and popcorn popper machine. In this machine, Cretors used a popcorn wagon.
Different varieties of old fashioned popcorn popper
As the name suggests, the popcorn poppers are used to pop popcorns in a popcorn maker. Today we can find many commercial popcorn machines in movie theaters and carnivals. One of the varieties of old fashioned popcorn popper is the hot air popcorn popper which was used in the late 1970s. This variant did not use oil to prepare tasty popcorns. Therefore, it was a healthier option. The other varieties of old fashioned popcorn popper also came into market which were designed to prepare a wide range of popcorns according to personal preferences. Here, the popcorn maker used oil to ad more flavor to the popcorns.
The Cretors' machine used a different variety of popcorn popper which prepared evenly cooked and tasty popcorns. He introduced many other varieties of popcorn poppers into his machines which were modified every time.
The wide range of old fashioned popcorn popper was used to pop popcorns in movie theaters or fairs. They are also used as small home appliances. The old fashioned popcorn popper was replaced by the microwave popcorn in mid-1980s. Since then a separate appliance for popping popcorns became out of use. Movie-style popcorn is made by simply adding butter and salt to season the raw popcorns.
